StyleXP FAQ -- Jan 18, 2005
General Questions:
Q: I purchased StyleXP 2.0, do I get StyleXP 3.0 for free?
A: In almost all cases, YES. We said free upgrades for a year, and we kept our promise. If there is a problem with upgrading please email sales@tgtsoft.com.
Q: What is new in StyleXP 3.0?
A: StyleXP 3.0 has several important bug fixes to StyleXP 2.0. In addition, it now supports Cursors. You can also edit the Cursor Sets to customize the cursors for your own look.
Q: Why should I upgrade to StyleXP 3.0?
A: If you are happy with StyleXP 2.0 and require no additional features, then there is no need to upgrade. If you feel you would enjoy the new features, since the upgrade is likely free, go ahead an upgrade.
Q: Will StyleXP 2.0 be supported in the future?
A: Since StyleXP 3.0 is released, support for StyleXP 2.0 will cease.
Q: Will StyleXP 3.0 support all the languages of StyleXP 2.0?
A: As our faithful user base helps us with converting the XML files (see program files\tgtsoft\skins\defaultskin), we anticipate all languages will be updated. Arabic, Chinese (2 flavors), Danish, German(Deutsch), Dutch, Finnish, French(Francais), Italian, Japanese, Korean, Magyar, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish(Espanol), Swedish, and Russian.
Q: How can I get a free registration key?
A: If you find a bug which no one reported, and we can reproduce your bug, we will send you a free registration key. You can also translate one of the XML languages, or website pages, that has not been fully translated before. If you have posted contributions (excluding wallpaper) to themejunkie.com, we will also be more than happy to give you a free registration key.
General Problems:
Q: What versions of Windows does StyleXP support?
A: StyleXP 3.0 supports Windows XP (Home and Professional, with or without SP2 installed), Windows XP Media Center edition, Windows XP Tablet edition, and Windows Server 2003. We just added support for multi-lingual XP. If you any problems, let us know.
Q: Does StyleXP 3.0 support Windows XP Service Pack 2?
A: Yes, we support SP2.
Q: Can I install StyleXP 3.0 over 2.0+?
A: You can install over it. In some odd cases, you first need to uninstall your current version of StyleXP. Then, reboot, and run the StyleXP 3.0 installer.
Q: Can I install both StyleXP Male and Female?
A: Yes. Just install both (one over the other) and you will get both sets of themes.
Q: After rebooting, sometimes my visual style does not stay applied, what is happening?
A: StyleXP 3.0 has a feature to help fix this bug. On the Options screen in StyleXP, check "Reapply Theme at Startup". If you do not see this option, you are probably running an older
version of StyleXP.
Q: What Icon Sets does Style XP support?
A: StyleXP 3.0 only support the new .iconset and .iconzip file format. However, a free and separate download is available called IconTranslate. This will translate from Stardock's .ip and .iptheme file format as well as Bee Icon's .bit format. We may add more icon set support if there is another file format you would like to see converted.
Q: How do I change the icon in an Icon Set?
A: Select the Icon Set in StyleXP 3.0. Then simply click on the icon you want to change. Pick a new .ico or .icl file and select the icon you want to replace it with. Click ok.. You .iconset file will be updated.
Q: My start menu or taskbar seems to flicker, what is happening?
A: You are running a program that constantly updates the desktop in the background, causing the transparent taskbar and start menu to flicker. Turn off the transparency under the "Transparency" tab in StyleXP.
Q: How come I cannot use a custom logon file when I'm logging into my domain at work?
A: Windows is setup to use a secure .dll file (msgina.dll) instead of using logonui.exe when logging into a domain, and we do not yet support this customization.
Q: Style XP looks like a bad Television set. I have the NVIDIA TNT RIVA video card. What is going on?
A: There appears to be a bug in the latest NVIDIA Riva video card drivers. For the moment, do not update your Nvidia driver or contact Nvidia customer support.
Error Messages:
Q: When I try to install StyleXP, I get an error saying it can't find USERENV.DLL. What is happening?
A: Make sure you are using a supported version of Windows (not Win 2000 or 98), which are listed above in this FAQ.
Q: I get an error when I try to enable StyleXP on my computer, "An error occurred while enabling StyleXP", what do I do?
A: Make sure you have a supported version of Windows. If you think you do, make sure you have the latest version of StyleXP installed. Older versions of StyleXP do not support recent versions of Windows XP.
Q: When trying to enter my registration key into StyleXP, I get the error, "StyleXP Registration Failed", what should I do?
A: First, make sure you entered in the key correctly. If you have recently changed hardware or formatted your computer, please send an email to support@tgtsoft.com containing your order and registration number (from your invoice email) and your current hardware ID (under Register in StyleXP, should start with "IAA"). If you do not have your order number, please provide any details about your order you can in the email.
Q: What does it mean when I get this error, "Failed to communicate with Helper, Data Area passed too small"?
A: If StyleXP has not expired, try uninstalling your current version of StyleXP, rebooting, and reinstalling.
Q: When trying to apply a logon screen, I get the error "An error occured while rebuilding the LogonUI.exe", what do I do?
A: Does this happen for all logons or just one? If it happens for all, try unchecking 'Always Rebuild EXE' on the 'Logons' screen? If it only happens with one logon, it might be currupted or a bad file, and should probably be deleted. Please send support@tgtsoft.com the file so we can take a look at it.
Q: A message is appearing at start up claiming that my registration cannot be checked because my system clock has rolled back.
A: If you have the latest version and a valid registration key, just enter it in and you should be ok again.
Q: When I try to add/remove programs in Windows, I can't open my Add/Remove Programs dialogue because StyleXP is running, and the Parser Message says: Value creation failed at line 472.
A: This bug occurs because the visual style or theme you have installed uses a file called "shellstyle.dll". This shellstyle.dll is bad and should be deleted. Usually the shellstyle.dll file is in the same directory as the visual style, in the subdirectory Shell\Color. For instance: C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\XTremeXP\Shell\NormalColor\shellstyle.dll
OR
The cause is using certain themes or "styles" not produced by Microsoft, which contain a programming error. Changing back to a Microsoft standard or "plus" theme will remove the problem. If you want to keep the non-standard theme, this is what you need to do:
Open your /WINDOWS/Resources/Themes folder.
Open the sub-folder of the theme you are currently using.
Open the sub-folder Shell, inside which Shellstyle.dll resides.
Rename the folder Shell to the name of the style you are using but don't rename Shellstyle.dll.
In the case of multi-part themes, that is, themes with more than one colour scheme, you'll need to rename each corresponding 'Shell' folder to what is displayed in Display Properties when you try to apply the theme.
Reapply the theme.
